</div><div class="content"><strong>Customer Review</strong></div><div class="content">My undergraduate was in Geography. My Masters in Environmental Engineering. I am not good at math, and formulas with greek letters still make me tense inside. Having said this, here are the books you need to concentrate on to pass this exam the first time.<br />
1. This book. It needs to be your centerpiece, your touchstone. You need to know this book, and especially the tables and appendices. Location, Location, Location is so important, know where everything is in this book. Make this book part of your life. Travel with it, sit with it, take it on your 10 minute coffee breaks... just know this book.<br />
2. Next: 101 Solved Engineering Problems. This book has the most realistic PE Problems. Do them all. They are categorized by type so you must write the page from Lindeberg next to the problem in this book for quick cross reference. This is your best book for quickly finding an example of what you are trying to solve on the test.<br />
3. Next: Lindeberg Practice Problems. Also good, but not as good as 101 (above). Use this as a reference. It aligns with the Lindeberg Hard Cover for quick cross reference.<br />
4. Last: Environmental Engineering Practice Exams (Schneiter). Do all the problems. It looks like a Lindeberg, but it isn't. Like 101 Solved Problems, you must cross-reference the problems with there topic location in Lindeberg Hard Cover. Questions are not in a particular order (4 practice exams, level about right), but questions are in random order which makes look-up during exam tough.<br />
5. Environmental Law Handbook (Sullivan). Need this for the regulatory, and statutory questions. Find a good OSHA book too.<br />
6. Last: Environmental Engineering Calculations (Lee & Lin). This book is expensive and big, but it is a good fail safe. What I liked about it is it presented things differently than Lindeberg, in case I didn't understand where Lindeberg was coming from.<br />
7. I HATE CONVERSIONS, and the test is full of them. If you hate conversions, buy Lindeberg's Engineering Conversions. It is a time saver.<br />
You do not have time to use even all of these references. Just don't show up with a heck of a lot more. You need to drill, drill, drill, on the problems so when you see them on the PE, it is like regurgatation. Lindeberg Hard Cover will covers everything you need to know... this book is your centerpiece! </div><div class="content"><br />

I did not major in any of the afternoon disciplines with their own unique test sections, so if you are planning to take a specific afternoon section (civil, electrical, mechanical, etc.) this review may not be as pertinent to you. <br />

This book provided an excellent review of most (not all) of the materials that showed up on the test. Paired with practice exams from NCEES and a good amount of study time, it will provide you all you need to pass the FE exam. I wish it would have had a bit more information on the topics of strength of materials and material properties in general, but other than that no complaints. <br />
<br />
I also took the test right out of school, so I'm sure that helped a bit... </div><div class="content"><br />

I used this book as my primary study material for the geotech portion of the exam and thought it was great! It seems like this ultra-foreign dude who knows the field really well just sat down one day, poured his knowledge out, and published this book without even proofreading it. The book is low quality, has many misspelled words, and messed up pictures. Nonetheless, I feel that I largely owe my PE to this publication. Extremely straightforward, understandable, excellent practice examples, organized, very stimulating. I wish all textbooks were written in such an aggressive manner. If you're studying soils or foundations in college you should definitely get this book - you'll thank me later. My point is this - buy this book and go through the whole thing and you'll have a solid understanding of how and why we build things inside mother earth. Cheers! </div><div class="content"><br />

In the book, there are 7-8 questions for each discipline area of civil worked out followed by 2 practice tests which include 30 questions each. To me this was better than nothing since many of the FE Civil books are lacking even this many questions. When I purchased this, I also bought the FE Civil review book by the NCEES (the guys who write the test). Their review book for civil contained only ~30 problems with terrible explanations. <br />
I recommend buying this book because as of right now, it's the best civil book there is and it helped me pass the test so I believe it will help you as well. </div><div class="content"><br />

Yes, the questions are generally tougher than what you will see on the exam; that's why they are good practice. These questions are in-line with what you can expect on the exam, however the questions are a little more challenging and usually require a few more steps to get to the answer. You wouldn't want an overly easy practice exam and then get slammed on the real exam. <br />

These guides are split up into morning type questions and afternoon type questions. I found that these guides were great preparation for the PE exam. The solutions are detailed enough to follow along and catch your mistakes. The solutions provided are way better approaches to answering the questions than any of the Lindeburg references, and they have fewer mistakes than Lindeburg. Some of the solutions to the Lindeburg guides are just outright wrong. The best guide for practice questions is the NCEES practice exam, but these are a wonderful supplement. <br />
<br />
I highly recommend getting the Six-Minute Solutions guide for whichever afternoon session you plan to take. If you do plan to take the Water/Environmental afternoon, get the older separate <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1888577908/?tag=ranford-20" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Six-Minute Solutions for Civil PE Exam Problems: Water Resources</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1888577894/?tag=ranford-20" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Six-Minute Solutions for Civil PE Exam Environmental Problems</a> guides. This one just combined those two, so there are just fewer questions overall. <br />

<br />
That being said, the actual questions on the FE are MUCH easier than what you find in the book. My advice for using the book--go through the first section of each subject and the accompanying solutions, but only go in depth on subjects that you just need a quick refresher in. I think if you follow the entire study plan you would be spending too much time studying.<br />
<br />
Remember you only get two minutes per question on the actual exam and its not worth the pain of trying to learn something for the first time that you've never taken a class in (and the review book isn't detailed enough for that anyway). You're better off dusting off the cobwebs on stuff that you at least used to know. <br />
<br />
P.S. Make sure you have a copy of the reference manual that you get for the FE as well and USE IT while you study. <br />

Everything reviewed is concise, to the point, and straight forward. There's no creative thinking here. The book is modelled after the weed-out classes of your early college years. It packs information with the expectation of the reader memorizing what's given. If you remember the golden age of the Internet, this book is the "down and dirty guide" to everything you learned. No flowing literary prose anywhere. This is what you wished your college textbook would be like, but wasn't. This of course means you won't find special case examples or anything overly complicated to the topic. Once the foundational basics/ideas/theorems/equations for an area is covered a new chapter will begin. <br />

Because of the brevity, you must buy the solution manual for the book. Without the solution manual, you will have all this information without any way to memorize it. Without the solutions you will not know whether you actually understood the review. <br />

That said, as far as I can tell this is pretty much the only comprehensive reference available for the exam so rather than talk more about the CERM itself I wanted to break down some things that helped me use the manual to study and pass the PE exam the first time (water resources, spring 2011): <br />
<br />
1) Download and print out a copy of the index for the CERM from the PPI website, bind it separately, and use that to look stuff up while studying and taking the exam to avoid constantly flipping around in the manual between the index and the chapters. Saves lots of time and aggravation working from multiple places in the CERM. I learned this from people in my review class and never would've thought of this on my own which is why I wanted to share it here. <br />
<br />
2) For the most used equations, write the constants and such in the margins next to the equations. Highlight the equations to make them pop from the columns of text in the book. This did a few things for me: familiarize me again with the equations and constants, help me remember how to use the equations, and also save me time looking for constants in the back or whatever. I did this the month before my review class started, helped me find what's in the manual too before I got into the heavy duty working of problems during my review class for hours on end. <br />

3) Tab everything possible. The exam is all about speed (~5 min/question...) so make sure you can find what you need real fast. I used a combination of heavy duty tabs with paper inserts and the sticky flags. I color coded the tabs by topic and tabbed my manual as follows: tabs across the top for tables of data (e.g. water demands per capita per day, wastewater production per capita per day, etc), tabs down the sides for specific topics/equations (e.g. shallow foundations, water hammer, that CM workflow diagram whose name escapes me right now, etc), tabs across the bottom for the reference tables in the back (e.g. head losses for specific fittings, moments of inertia for generic shapes, the Ten State's regs, etc). <br />
<br />
Seemed to work real well, I probably had a few too many flags/tabs but I only needed to use the index to find something a few times during the exam so I guess I did okay there. I left all my tabs and flags in the CERM after finding out I passed since it makes the book look real salty and reminds me of the pain I went through studying and taking the exam. <br />
<br />
Bottom line here: Know what's in the book and where to find it. The morning exam was pretty much straight out of the CERM and my review class, quite literally 95% of the questions were pure muscle memory from using the CERM to study. The PM exam was the similar but about 25% of the questions couldn't be answered out of the CERM and needed an outside reference (master's level stuff in my opinion and I don't have an MSCE so I just did what I could and guessed the rest). <br />
<br />
4) Use the CERM as much as possible while studying. I know this sounds obvious but I first attempted studying with stacks of textbooks from engineering school in addition to my CERM and quickly realized it would never work. You need to become as familiar as possible with the CERM if you want a ghost of a chance of passing, and you'll be amazed what's in there if you look. Also, you will not have time to flip around between 20 books during the exam so just get used to using the CERM as much as possible while studying. Heck, sleep with your CERM if you have to and take it with you to lunch. Remember, there are many CERMs but this one is mine, without my CERM I am nothing, without me my CERM is a monitor stand. <br />
<br />
For the exam, I only brought in my trusty marked up and tabbed CERM, my open channel hydraulics book, and my (undergrad) geotech book along with my notes and sample problems from my review class. I spent probably 80% of my time in the exam using the CERM, my other references were nearly useless save for some rando oddball questions I was able to find during my spare time to get some extra points. The CERM and a few other things were enough to get me through the WR exam and I am neither a water resources engineer by practice nor the kid from Good Will Hunting. <br />
<br />
5) Take a review class if at all possible. I was fortunate to find one an hour away on Saturdays. It helped me get into the mode of studying a lot (I kept records and including 56 hours of class I spent about 250 hours preparing for the exam over about 3.5 months, did nothing the two weeks before the test due to burnout and a work trip during which I was not going to study in the hotel at night), helped me realize I wasn't the only one fighting my way through the pain and misery, and helped me learn enough to get by in areas that I had little to no college coursework on (e.g. transpo, econ, etc). The review was kinda costly but I figure I got off cheap passing the PE the first time. <br />

The depth isn't enough for this book to serve as a stand-alone comprehensive professional reference, but it's enough to give an introductory overview or quick review of the topics, which is good enough for many purposes (and excessive detail can be detrimental for those purposes). Perhaps the best testimony I can offer is that I've purchased a copy of this book for all of the technical staff in my office, and I intend to use the book as a key resource for our in-house continuing education program. There are a number of excellent technical handbooks for the practicing engineer, but I am not aware of another book that brings together the "soft" issues so important to success in any engineering endeavor. As most practicing civil engineers understand, project management, staff development, marketing, permitting, and collaboration with colleagues and clients make up a huge part of the job, and it is a shame that these issues are given so little attention in the typical civil engineering education. <br />
<br />
This book provides an excellent introduction to these vital skills, and would be a very useful reference for any young civil engineering professional. </div><br />
